Fitting eight cast iron shelf brackets in a Ladd’s Addition pantry
A woodworker restoring an open-shelf pantry brought in rough-sawn two-inch thick Douglas fir planks. Modern pressed steel shelf brackets from big box stores flexed under twenty preserving jars and sheared their drywall hollow anchors. We weighed and paired four sets of our sand-cast iron scullery brackets with natural beeswax protective coating, providing matching countersunk steel slotted screws sized for direct timber stud engagement.
Each pair of brackets carries one hundred and forty pounds without deflecting. The homeowner dry-fitted the brackets at our Irving Street oak counter to verify screw hole clearance before setting a hold. The eight-bracket order totalled $76.00 at checkout.
Traditional sand-cast iron shelf brackets with structural gussets
Our cast iron shelf brackets are poured into green sand moulds, cooled slowly to relieve internal stress, and finished with a hot immersion in organic beeswax. We reject hollow pot metal, zinc die-cast alloys, and painted sheet stampings. A sand-cast bracket exhibits honest granular surface texture, sharp 90-degree internal squareness, and countersunk apertures drilled for traditional flathead slotted screws.
Available in three projection lengths: 150 mm for spice racks, 200 mm for standard pantry jar shelving, and 250 mm for heavy prep timber planks. We display pairs on the workbench in Aisle 4.

Forged solid brass wall hooks for entryways and sculleries
Brass plated zinc hooks snap under winter overcoats and peel within a damp entryway. We stock only solid hot-forged brass hooks machined from single bar stock. The metal has no chemical lacquer coating, allowing it to develop a mellow deep honey patina through regular hand contact over years.
Each hook is drilled with countersunk screw holes and ships with matching solid brass wood screws. Used for cast-iron skillet hanging rails, wet apron pegs, linen towel racks, and heavy canvas bag storage along entry corridors.

Replacing failing cupboard latches on a historic Pearl District sideboard
A homeowner on Northwest 11th brought in broken spring-loaded magnetic catches from a built-in kitchen sideboard. The internal springs had fatigued, causing the solid fir cabinet doors to rattle open whenever heavy traffic passed outside on Irving Street. We matched four hand-forged black iron thumb latches with drop catches and matching keeper strike plates.
Unlike spring mechanisms that fail from mechanical wear, gravity drop latches have no moving internal springs to fatigue. The gravity drop lever clicks securely into place and opens smoothly with a thumb press. The four latch sets cost $88.00 total and were installed in under an hour using hand screwdrivers.
Hardware quotation bases and floor hold guidelines
All hardware items at Cean Shop are priced individually or by matched pair, running from $2 to $95. We do not sell hardware through an automated web cart. Quotations and customer reservations depend on:
- Metal composition: forged brass, sand-cast grey iron, or stainless steel
- Size, throw length, weight class, and projection clearance
- Clearance bin status for lot-end sample pieces
- Delivery check for large architectural iron packages across Portland
All holds remain active for forty-eight hours with no upfront payment. Inspect screw hole threads, castings, and tolerances in person at 1201 NW Irving Street.
