Double-dipped white porcelain enamel washing basins on heavy carbon steel.
Offered in three diameters: 26cm Scullery ($18), 32cm Washbasin ($28), and 38cm Dairy Basin ($42). Inquiry-only quote basis.
Spun from a heavy 1.2mm carbon steel core and dipped twice in vitrified porcelain enamel glass at 850°C, these utility basins offer thermal mass, chemical resistance, and non-porous hygiene that cheap lightweight camping tins cannot match. The deep rounded lip is finished by hand in dark navy glaze, reinforcing the perimeter edge against dropped ladles and counter knocks.
From bread dough bulk fermentation and vegetable rinsing in a farmhouse kitchen to hand laundry and floor washing in an Eastside flat, this basin does not flex or chip under boiling water. We stock complete stacks across Aisle 3 at our 1201 Northwest Irving Street shop floor.

Inspecting rim glazing and base flatness on our zinc draining counter
Each shipment of enamel basins arriving at our Northwest Irving loading dock is unpacked onto the service counter for inspection. Our sales consultant places each bowl onto a precision-ground granite surface plate and checks for perimeter rock. A basin that rocks more than one millimetre is rejected back to the forge, as bread dough kneaders and dairy processors require a dead-flat base that sits firm on scrubbed timber prep tables.
We run a bare thumb around the full interior curve and along the navy rim bead to verify complete glass vitrification without sharp burrs. What our customers compare on is direct: core steel thickness that does not oil-can when filled with hot water, true acid resistance against vinegar and citrus, transparent pricing ($18–$42), and our central Portland showroom where you can weigh the piece in your hands.
“Thin aluminium bowls bend when you rest a hot stockpot in them. A 1.2mm porcelain enamel basin takes sixty pounds of soaking beans without flex and wipes clean with plain vinegar.”

Who this is not for: customers seeking decorative painted tinware or microwave-safe plastics. These basins have heavy carbon steel cores that are completely incompatible with microwave ovens.
Enamel basin care, temperature tolerance, and cleaning methods
Yes. Because the core is continuous 1.2mm carbon steel, these basins are fully compatible with induction hobs, gas flames, and woodstove tops for water heating or boiling laundry linens. Always ensure there is liquid or fat inside before heating to avoid thermal shock to the vitreous glass.
We recommend woven copper wire scouring pads or natural tampico fibre dish brushes with warm water and bicarbonate of soda. Never use hardened steel wool or carbide abrasives, which can scratch the glass glaze surface over time.
Like any authentic porcelain enamel ware, a violent drop onto stone flagging can chip the exterior glass glaze, exposing the dark carbon steel beneath. The steel core will oxidize gracefully without affecting the interior food-grade surface, continuing to function as an honest utility vessel for decades.
