Oiled Beechwood & Horsehair Sweep Broom

$48 to $76

Everyday domestic goods pricing basis: $48 for the 30-centimetre head with 130-centimetre ash handle; $76 for the 45-centimetre broad hall sweep with threaded joint. Hold reservations valid for 48 hours without payment.

We stock natural horsehair brooms for unsealed oak, linoleum, fir flooring, and polished concrete in Portland residences. Synthetic flagged nylon brooms develop static that scatters fine soot and dog hair into baseboards. Natural split horsehair carries natural scales that gather powdery ash, bakery flour, and cellar dust on the first forward pass without scratching delicate finishes.

Each head is milled from sustainably harvested European beech timber, submerged in cold-pressed raw linseed oil, and drilled with forty-eight paired tuft sockets. Bristles are wired by hand using internal copper wire loops rather than glued tufts that fail when damp. The handle socket features a continuous threaded brass sleeve that will not loosen or strip under diagonal sweeping tension.

Fitting twenty broom heads for historic timber sculleries in Northwest Portland

During autumn restoration projects along Northwest 21st Avenue, contractors requested floor brooms capable of gathering masonry mortar dust, plaster crumble, and sawdust from 110-year-old Douglas fir subfloors without grinding grit into raw wood fibers. Standard commercial synthetic brooms skipped over floorboard gaps and flung abrasive silica into historic millwork.

Our sales consultant demonstrated forty-five centimetre beechwood horsehair heads fitted to 140-centimetre straight-grain ash staves. The natural horsehair split tips settle into tongue-and-groove micro-cracks, lifting packed dust in single unified sweeps. We held twenty matched sets at our Irving Street collection desk, allowing the cleaning teams to test handle balance and bristle resilience on our concrete floor before removing them to the job site.

Honest limitations and surfaces where horsehair should never be used

Natural horsehair is designed specifically for dry, indoor domestic surfaces. It is not an all-purpose broom, and we refuse to recommend it for wet or coarse outdoor tasks:

  • Never use on wet concrete or standing puddles: Wet horsehair clumps together, retains grease, and requires extensive comb drying to restore tuft alignment. For wet courtyards, choose our stiff bassine or piassava yard brooms.
  • Not built for coarse asphalt or outdoor gravel: Rough outdoor aggregate will grind down the delicate split ends within a few weeks of heavy use.
  • Storage requirement: Never store this broom resting on its bristles. Hang it by the handle leather lanyard or store it inverted so bristles maintain their natural spring.
