Cold-Rolled Modular Steel Utility Rack
Price depends strictly on bay configuration: $185 for the single 3-tier pantry bay (36 inches wide); $340 for the 4-tier utility bay (48 inches wide); up to $616 for the reinforced 5-tier basement double bay with galvanized steel wire decking.
Our cold-rolled modular steel utility racks are built for residential pantries, home canning basements, potting sheds, and craft workshops across Portland. Thin sheet-metal shelves sold in flat-pack home boxes sag in the center under three cases of preserving jars. Our uprights are pressed from 14-gauge structural carbon steel with interlocking teardrop keyholes, requiring zero diagonal cross-braces.
Each deck tier holds up to 600 pounds of distributed static load. Shelves adjust on 1.5-inch vertical centers, letting you fit tall carboys, zinc washtubs, or dense jar crates without wasted vertical air. The matte graphite powder coat resists rust in damp basement environments and cleans easily with a damp cotton cloth.

Outfitting five basement canning larders in historic Ladd’s Addition
In October 2026, an urban food preserver in Southeast Portland required heavy basement shelving capable of supporting approximately 400 quarts of pickled vegetables, honey crocks, and cider flagons on an uneven 1912 concrete cellar floor. Consumer wire shelving previously warped under the concentrated glass weight, causing jar lids to slide and unseal.
We configured three 48-inch bays of our cold-rolled utility shelving, using heavy welded wire deck inserts and threaded leveling feet with neoprene floor isolation pads. The consultant verified that each shelf tier held sixty full quart jars across four tiers with zero deflection across the 48-inch steel beam span. The customer inspected the fully loaded floor unit at our shop counter before loading the modular packs into their utility wagon.
Structural steel tolerances, material gauges, and tier capacity ratings
We supply exact engineering figures so home organizers can calculate realistic floor spans and load distributions without guessing:
| Steel Upright Gauge | 14-gauge (1.98mm) cold-rolled structural carbon steel with continuous rolled C-channel profile. |
|---|---|
| Horizontal Beam Gauge | 16-gauge (1.52mm) steel with stepped safety flange for recessed decking flush seating. |
| Connection Type | Boltless dual-rivet keyhole locking pins seated with a rubber mallet. Zero loose hardware. |
| Deck Options | Heavy 6mm galvanized welded wire mesh (open airflow) or 12mm Baltic birch ply decking. |
| Tier Load Capacity | 600 pounds (272 kg) distributed static weight per tier; 2,400 pounds total bay capacity. |
| Vertical Adjustment | Interlocking slots spaced at 1.5-inch (38mm) increments along full upright height. |
| Finish Coating | Thermoset polyester-epoxy powder coat in matte industrial graphite; salt-spray tested. |
Four clear steps from showroom reservation to vehicle loading
Every rack system is modular and flat-packed in heavy craft corrugated cartons designed to fit inside a standard hatchback, station wagon, or pickup truck:
- Select your dimensions: Check our aisle measurements (widths of 36, 48, or 60 inches; depths of 18 or 24 inches; heights of 60, 72, or 84 inches).
- Place hold request: Submit an inquiry specifying your desired bay footprint or call our counter staff directly at +1 (340) 885-9800.
- Floor verification: We pull the component boxes from our storage stacks and set aside your complete rack package under your hold name.
- Counter collection or local drop: Drive to our 1201 Northwest Irving Street curb during open hours (10:00–18:00 weekdays, 11:00–17:00 weekends). Our consultant will help load components into your vehicle.
Assembly tools required and situations where this rack is inappropriate
We are straightforward about assembly mechanics and architectural limitations. We do not want customers buying a rack that does not suit their room:
- Assembly requires a firm rubber mallet: The dual-rivet keyholes must be tapped down firmly into the tapered slots until seated. Never strike the bare steel with a steel carpenter’s hammer, which will distort the locking tabs. We loan assembly mallets at our counter.
- Not designed for unlevel dirt crawlspaces: Racks must sit on level concrete, stone, or reinforced floorboards. If your cellar floor slopes noticeably, use our heavy screw-jack leveling feet ($16 per pair).
- Wall anchoring recommendation: Units built above 72 inches tall carrying top-heavy tools or liquids should be tethered to wall studs using our cast-iron anchor brackets.
